If two iPhone 5/5c/5s users are in a WiFi dead zone, Airdrop will still work. I believe the short range is done to minimize the "out of sight" unknown recipient problem. If you want, you can Airdrop with anyone so you won't accidentally share your photo with the wrong person.
Since I'm the only one with a compatible iOS 7 device, I haven't been able to try it yet.

I believe air drop uses Bluetooth to establish the connection then wifi for the transfer. Bluetooth is good since it is a low power feature designed to be always on.
I finally tried this between my iPhone 5s and my wife's new iPhone 5 (my old AT&T iPhone, unlocked, and just activated on T-Mobile.) I went to share a photo and her face showed up in the AirDrop row. The transfer went very quickly, just a few seconds.
Maybe when Mavericks shows up, we'll be able to AirDrop to the Mac.

Lightning/30 pin HDMI adapter
Anyone know of one other than Apple's $50.00 adapter? Looking for something to use with iPad AND iPhone 4.

I don't think you'll find that other than from Apple. I checked Belkin and Amazon doesn't make one either. Definitely doesn't fit their "basic" model.
And even a 30-pin to lightning adapter to connect to the 30-pin side of an existing cable will set you back $40.

That strikes me as really silly - as while I have had Airdrop on my mac, it is generally of little use, as even as a laptop it is rarely in a place where I would share files from mac to mac (I guess if we had multiple macs on the home network it would be valuable). But in a house with 6 iOS devices that would make sense….
I grabbed it last night and it fixed my iMessage problem I was having.
The phone also feels a hair faster.

Instead of spending $50 on an adapter I would rather spend $100 on an Apple TV. You will be able to stream music, video, pictures, etc in HD from both the iPhone and the iPad without even getting up to plug in any cables. I use Airplay from my iPhone and iPad all the time and it works great.
Plus you would get the added benefit of having an extra streaming box for Netflix, HBO Go, some other services, and everything in your iTunes library. Since iOS7 has came out I have been using iTunes Radio to play streaming music through my Onkyo AVR quite a bit. It's a nice, easy way to get your music on the best speakers in your house if you have an AVR setup.
If you already have a Roku or other streaming device many of these features will be redundant but if you have a lot invested in the Apple/iTunes ecosystem already the Apple TV is a great device. I know it's twice as much money as the adapter you asked about but it would take care of those duties plus a whole lot more. $50 for an HDMI adapter seems pretty overpriced but $100 for an Apple TV is a good value.
I bought the 30-pin version of the Digital Video adapter for my iPhone 4 because I wanted a way to play content from my iPhone to an HDTV when I travel. So I bought the Lightning version when it became available after I got my iPhone 5.
It doesn't get a lot of work, but it's a great tool to have (that and the 12' HDMI cable) in my travel kit. Also, the DVA will play some media and Apps to an HDCP TV that won't AirPlay.

Good news from Slingmedia... the Slingplayer apps are being updates so you can use them to Airplay to an Apple TV!
Lets hope the DishAnywhere app is updated as well.

I use AirPlay with the DishAnywhere from the downstairs ViP 722k (the stubborn old coot version of a Hopper & JoeyGood news from Slingmedia... the Slingplayer apps are being updates so you can use them to Airplay to an Apple TV! Lets hope the DishAnywhere app is updated as well.
) and it would be nice if the Skip Fwd and Back buttons really worked. Right now, the playback freezes and I have to turn off AirPlay and then turn it back on to restore playing.
