Apple Live Event: iPhone 6, Apple Watch

Edge looks like a scam, since you have to pay 60% of the unsubsidized phone price before you can upgrade, and can only pay ahead on the phone at the beginning. For an iPhone 6, it would require spending at least $360, about what you would pay for the 2 year price plus the b.s. fees that they tack on.

Sigh...

As Todd Smith expected, I did not pre-order; I posted that I was holding off, because I couldn't afford it, then it came out, and I got the itch. No one knows that itch more than Todd Smith. Well, we decided that my wife's upgrade would be used to get Nick a 6/64 for his birthday; She would take my 5S (she has a 4S), and I would use the second upgrade for a 6/64. There was no way my 17 year old was having a 6 and me not having one. No way, no how. And we would trade in the 4S and 5 for $400.

So, I check the Verizon store -- 3 + weeks out. I check apple store online (8-10 days), but the Michigan Avenue Store in Chicago had them in stock and I will be in Chicago on Thursday. So, I call. Sure, you can pick it up. During the time I am placing the order, they run out of stock... of course. So, the two phones are ordered, and will be here around the time of his birthday. But if they have them in stock on Thursday, I'll cancel the order and buy on the street. :)

Ok, get your laugh in, but remember Todd Smith, this is only the first phone I have bought in 12 months. Can you say the same? ;)

I have posted this YouTube link in the PUB, but I think this is important enough to be mentioned in the open forum too. iPhone 6 Plus Bend Test. Check it out:

I have read a few articles about this. From what I've read there is no wonder this is happening. One dude said his plus was in the front pocket of his pants for close to 17 hours. Most of those he was driving. Get real. Sounds to me like these folks are not smart. The others pretty much look like they are bending them on purpose to make a point. Anything will bend if forced enough.

Well, something to keep in mind when using the phone!

At the time of the event I was on a cruise ship and the connection wasn't good enough so I just finally got a chance to see the new products this morning and read through this thread.

First of all congratulations to all who have the new iphone6.

Most here know that I had a total phone failure in June and could not wait so I decided to get the Samsung 5s until such time as the 6 and the Apple watch was released. I have been using a Sony smart watch (2) with my android phones for about a year now and it is very addictive. In this century, a watch is no longer about knowing the time. Once you get one and pair it to your phone, going back to just a watch is like goi9ng back to a pay phone when you are used to a smart cell phone. If you still use a pay phone, fine. But if you have become accustomed to a smart phone with text and e-mail and other internet related stuff, then I would say getting a smart watch will be equally addictive. What I see the Apple watch does, is advance the Sony Smartwatch2 the same amount with all its advanced capability. The Apple watch is to my Sony smartwatch what the iphone 6 is to the old ipaq from HP. It's that much better than anything else out there, even from Samsung. Apple watch is way way above the the Samsung Gear in every respect.

Because I used a 2 year + upgrade on my Samsung phone in June, I have to wait until December before my next upgrade is eligible. But the apple watch is still not expected to be out so I will wait until after it is released and then move to the 6, maybe the 6+ and apple watch for myself. My wife will want the smaller apple watch too. So our upgrades will be put off now until about March 2015.

Here's what I expect to see ( my own prediction ) on the upgrades to the Apple watch- Thinner case and a round version. Continued release of a variety of band styles, including better selection of jewelry styles for women.

Here's what I expect to see on the new iphone release next year- wireless charging and improved pixel count to 1080 x 1920 for the 6 that matches the 6+

I am very excited about Apple Pay too, especially by using the Apple watch.

He keeps saying this was science. No, it was theatrics. Science would have done a measured test showing the actual measured stress-strain force to bend the iphone 6+ to permanency. The theatrical bending he did is completely unrealistic as to how people hold a phone. Another scientific study would be to subject many different phones to a fixed or even variable strain-stress and compare how each withstands the strain-stress.

I think my biggest wants for future iphones are (in no particular order):
-Higher megapixel cameras with 4K video capture
-Reduced top and bottom bezels
-Water resistance
-Stereo speakers (don't need to reduce top and bottom bezels if they're needed for this a la HTC)
-Wireless charging
-Even bigger battery
-Better headphones- the stock ones are not compatible with my ears
-Quad HD screen (maybe- I need to checkout a LGG3 or a note 4 to determine if there's a discernible difference)

As for software:
-Making my need to jailbreak disappear: An intelliscreenX style lock screen, biteSMS features integrated into messaging, better widgets, the ability to reset the icon grid to increase columns and rows and decrease unused space. There are other jailbreak tweaks I use, but these are the most common and most important.

Good list Dangue!

I was kind of surprised there was no Water Resistance in this years model. 4K resolution would be great and would help drive 4K TV sales and Apple could come out with their 4K Apple TV that has been rumored for so long.

I am also shocked that the iPhone still only has 1 speaker. I would like to see the iPhone have 3 speakers.

One of the Top Right, and two on the bottom (left and right) so depending on how you were holding it you would get stereo sound. This would be great for watching movies, TV or just listening to music.

Wireless charging would be great... I am hoping to see a iPhone 6 Plus QI charging case soon, as in my car on my desk and at home I have QI chargers. Just drop the phone on it and it starts charging.

Battery life on the iPhone 6+ is good, but it can always be better, or how about building solar cells into the screen... that would be a cool feature. :)

The screen resolution is good now to me, and I have looked at the higher res phone and they did not look that much better then the 6+ screen. Although if the screen natively handled 2160p (4K) that would be cool too. (But at such a screen that small would we notice a major difference?)

I'd also encourage anyone to add to my list. Especially the android folks that May or may not already have experience with different tech.

I'm tied to the iPhone ecosystem, but I am excited about google's modular phone effort. That could fundamentally alter the phone landscape and would usher in exciting times.

With the "flex" iPhone 6+ test today it got me thinking would heat cause more of a problem with the bigger phone as thin as it is?
Flex when at normal temps is one thing, flex with heat is another.

I stopped at a Verizon store today on my way home (to check some accessories) and had another look at iPhone 6 Plus. Guess what? The display unit was slightly bent!

Not the kind of temperature that can be reached in your pocket! :D
The melting point of aluminum is above 1200F; annealing temperature is 650F or higher. You would need a torch!

I think they could very well make a flexible phone if they wanted to. Maybe not make it flex too easily but enough to where if it got under pressure it would not break anything and be able to flex back.

Samsung has already demonstrated flexible phone displays. LG has a curved G Flex phone that flexes to some extent (but maintains its shape).

Not to be outdone, Apple has released iPhone 6 Plus that changes its shape in your pocket! :D

Good luck finding a pay phone today!

I learned today that I am eligible for an upgrade. 6 or 6+ might be determined by a visit to an ATT or Apple store. My interest is in typing - are the keyboards bigger?
