new edision os mio 4k issues

I just don't want to "push the wrong button" due to lack of documentation

These software images are "open source." They're not going to come with a 50-page manual. I second what primestar31 said; we're all learning this together, and this forum is one of the best places to learn.

Sure, if Titanium had unlimited hours of the day to write a huge manual for one iteration of a particular image he could, but these images change and update too frequently; it would be obsolete within a few months (or even weeks). I feel like you're expecting too much too quickly; we'll always try to help as much as we can but we don't have all the answers either (yet!)

I'm not shy about posting as many questions as I need to before I make a change to my Edision. Sometimes it does take days to figure it out, but I consider that part of the thrill of this hobby.

It's not a criticism of any particular person. Please don't read too much into the posts like one other person did. I won't mention any names but since that person insulted me I added that person to my ignore list. That person could have PM'd me if that person had a problem with my posts rather than insult me in public. Anyway, what's the possibility of having an FAQ done? I guess I'm on my own. I won't ask anymore questions.

As to "pushing the wrong button". Heed these warnings, as I found out myself only yesterday when I accidentally nuked the image in slot1. Let me reiterate I caused this problem myself, see #2:

1: ALWAYS have another good image in another slot.
2: Be VERY careful mucking around in the Mio's file structure through Network Neighborhood, especially if you have a touchy laptop trackpad.
3: MENU button on the RCU can recover from an apparent corrupted image, IF you have another image in another slot. Just press it multiple times while re-powering the Mio from the ac adapter and it'll bring up the boot menu to allow booting from another image.
4: ALWAYS have a reasonably current image backup, and KEEP TRACK of which thumbdrive has the backup image you need!

#3 advice alone could have got me up and running in a few minutes, versus hours of trying everything else. The thing is, I actually read that in a post 2 months ago at legalfreetoair (Hyper's site) but forgot about it, and didn't have it in my notes. Please benefit from me posting this, if needed sometime.

About 90% done on the start-up and basic menu FAQ for The North American Project modified image. Waiting for the next revision of the TNAP image as a few start-up wizard steps are changing and looking into providing preload lists of the Mood (Muzak) radio and possibly other hidden services that are hard to lock or must be manually entered.

Why would think that you are on your own? This forum is the perfect place to ask questions and hopefully get answers. Have we done OK so far?

That's a very good idea, maybe posted at Titanium's site and here in FTA FAQ of Free To Air Discussion section. That way all you lucky folks who have on of these and worked your way through on your own could help out other folks (like me) who aren't lucky enough to have one yet but may get one someday.

I learned fast. ASAP when you get a new receiver perform a complete firmware backup.
Do it again after you get your sats scanned in and running at a point you feel comfortable.
Offload it to your PC. Don't trust an external (or internal HDD if that's the case)....a firmware flash with HDD connected can require an initialization and format.
You can always get snippets of files from an unzipped firmware backup. 7zip. That works pretty good.

Yeah. I'm searching and asking for something Linux that compares to a BDA driver to stream my mio to Media Portal, Kodi.....easily and reliably.
I don't think I'll ever need those 4 slots. Maybe 2. Probably 1. More Linux commands to open up space.
Some GUI, some FTP. some terminal commands. Much nicer that a closed source chinabox.
Don't expect for it to run all of the stuff you can slap on a dedicated streaming box. It's a satellite receiver and DVR. Full blown Kodi will make them puke.
But runs iptv pretty darned good if you venture that way. If you have a fairly new tv, make sure you use a good hdmi cable also. Also, HDMI CEC works quite "funky".

Brian mentioned that TNAP is tuned for beginners. There are good guys here who can assist in helping you get running.

Yes, works great on a LAN, but no transcoding not suitable for low bandwidth internet streaming. WebIF, VLC, PotPlayer, MXplayer, etc. are often used or some prefer a smartphone / tablet app. An Enigma2 client could be added to Kodi on any device. Port 8001

Was watching the CBS 4:2:2 primetime programming earlier this evening via the Android phone with DreamDroid app. For a bigger live stream screen, cast to the Samsung TV. :)

I don't have a Samsung SmartTV so I need to be able to cast to a Roku Ultra. It would probably help to have an Enigma app for the Roku since the existing Roku mirroring/casting apps don't seem to work with the DreamDroid smartphone app. I was going to try R-Cast but the smartphone app isn't in the GooglePlay store. I guess I'll have to keep on searching for a solution. Besides, if all the functions aren't in one app it becomes just as much a hassle as having multiple remote controls.

Miracast, Chromecast, Anycast, Firestick... any of these inexpensive devices would be simple to mirror an IOS or Android smart device rather than attempting to create a new interface for a Roku device. Maybe a cheap Android box from Amazon?

I was hoping to avoid buying more stuff but I just placed an order for an android TV box. I'll probably buy a DTV dongle for the osmio (for some reason I keep wanting to call it an os2mio) since I've heard that is a possible addition. That'll get 2 cables out of the way. I hope it all works as expected. Doesn't sound like Miracast, Chromecast, Anycast, Firestick, etc, will do what I want.

Make sure you get a 950Q. On Ebay $20

I was looking around and there's a newer model. I don't like buying used stuff but I think I'll buy the 950Q anyway - doesn't look like there's a new/unused one available. Uh, does this work with NA DTV? ebay states ntsc but not atsc.

Only certain very few models work. The 950Q is tested and verified to work. I don't know about the others.

Are there picons for this STB? I would assume they'd have to be for NA services.

Picons are not STB specific.

I am not into loading up the CPU with picons, so haven't collected any.

I see references to USA users collecting picons from IPTV databases like xTreme or European satellite databases and reassigning to our satellites. Might check any service that provides EPG. Some manually grab them from service wiki listings.

I'm trying out the OpenVIX image and so far I like it. PurE2 didn't impress me but I do like the SatDreamGR image also.

I just got openvpn running on my osmio4k (OpenVIX) but I'm wondering why I can use openvpn on my PC to connect to my osmio4k but it doesn't connect when using 2 enigma apps running on my smartphone that is connected using openvpn. I can connect after turning off the VPN on the smartphone. Logs don't show a problem (none that I can see). If dreamboxEDIT works over the VPN, then why does smartphone apps fail?

I just got my Android SmartTV box today and it works. It's not easy using the remote that came with it but the DreamDroid app on the Android box does work so I can remote the Edision. But it looks like it'll be a good idea to have a TV connected directly to the edision in case problems crop up and I did run into an issue while testing. I need to figure out how to organize the sat lists (since they're not grouped by sat on the DreamDroid app) to make it easier on the wife since she'll be the primary user and she's not as technically inclined as I am. I'll have to play around with this setup in the man cave and see if it'll be convenient enough for the wife. A keyboard and mouse attached to the Android box would help but that'll mean more clutter in the living room - I wouldn't have a problem with that but the wife would. One other thing, even though this Android box has a quad core it is slow.
