Join the SatelliteGuys Folding@Home Team!

Two weeks? I meant six days! Congratulations to our (soon to be) new Team Leader, Scorpion.sting!
Six days? Alas, I am atop the Leader Board no more...

Congratulations, Scorpion.sting !!!

So, I'm really curious what effect the patches for "Meltdown" and "Spectre" will have on Folding performance. On one hand, a dedicated Folding rig won't be running other software which might put you at risk for the exploits uncovered. However, a lot of people use Windows or Linux boxes for general purpose in addition to Folding in the background. When those machine get patched (which they should!) I'm curious to see how much of an impact the extra layer of Kernel protection has. NVIDIA has released (or will release) drivers that address the speculative exception exploits behind Spectre and Meltdown (see here: Security Bulletin: NVIDIA GPU Display Driver Security Updates for Speculative Side Channels | NVIDIA) so time will tell.

There is nada on the Folding Forum so far (except what I added).

Looks like the out-of-band Meltdown Patch may have claimed it's first victim. Scorpion.sting went from 1,500,000 PPD to 200,000 PPD after January 5.

If Scorpion.sting continues his current production numbers, Voyager6 will pass him for the #2 Team spot in 20 days or so. But the Team could really use Scorpy's numbers since we're so close to breaking into the Top 50 (less than a month!) but won't be able to stay there for long as NVIDIA_GPU_Cloud and Whitepages are coming up fast!

Hmmm, well, looks like the NVIDIA GPU Cloud "team" went up in a puff of smoke. If you look at our current daily rate, SatelliteGuys.US is #31, so we should continue to rise through the rankings.

Been watching as we creep up on the Top 50! Maybe this will be more like the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady wins the race.

It's a Holiday in the U.S., so you know what that means... NO POINTS UPDATES!

So, we'll be patient as long as the Assignment servers keep on serving up Work Units to Fold...

And now it looks like Scorpion.sting is totally idle! I see that he hasn't been on the site since April of last year.

In possibly related news, I spotted our electric bill :imshocked:eek::imshocked for last month. I am going to have to take a month-long break from Folding to get a good indication of our monthly Folding costs. We have natural gas for pretty much all the major appliances, so other than the refrigerator, clothes washer, and dishwasher, our electric is made up of lighting, computers, and TV. And if the computers (Folding) is half of the electric bill, I may not be able to justify the added costs to my better half, the accountant!

Shhh! Don't let Mrs Volts see our electric bill.

Maybe Scorpy re-tasked his GPUs for Etherium or some other crypto-currency? Have you tried to find an NVIDIA graphics card lately? They're all showing out-of-stock (well, except eBay) and even then, WTF is up with a GTX 1080 WTF card at $900???!!

I don't know, but yeah that have gotten crazy, and everyone trying to get rich quick.
If the mining slows down or crashes, there is gonna be a bunch of cards everywhere!

That's why Nvidia is asking retailers to favor gamers over miners by limiting bulk buying of their GPUs. Nvidia can't be unhappy with all the money mining is bringing them but they know that market is temporary. Eventually the market will be flooded with used, high end GPUs at low prices. Nvidia doesn't want all the customers who have bought their products for years to be turned away now because of a fad.

Edit: I would also be weary of buying these used 1080 Ti and other high end GPUs when they flood the market. Some of these people are using 6 and even 12 GPUs in a single PC at 100% load 24/7. These GPUs are designed to handle load but probably not with a bunch of other GPUs also at full load dumping heat all over them. It would have to be an amazing deal before I would even consider buying a used mining GPU.
