7.26 - 2.30? What is the real number?

My box says 2.30, and I read that is really 7.26

Who made up this numbering scheme?

yes thats correct. The software version is 2.30 and when it gets downloaded to stb it will say 7.26.

There are several parts of the software, each having its own number. The overall "Software Version" of the latest download is "2.30"; the HAL (or Nep.) version is 00.07.26 (or 726). There is also Middleware Version, Guide Version, Secure Firmware Version, etc. Traditionally in this forum we go by the "HAL" (or "Nep.") version number to identify different STB software versions. This number is the easiest one to look up: just press HELP and then INFO to see it. Other version numbers can be found on System Status screens in System Settings. But it takes much more clicks to get there.
