Friend TRICKED Directtv into getting HD Locals!

I have been wondering also about getting local tv stations from another market. I live about 5 miles or so to the next county that has different news stations than I do. I noticed an option in the setup of my DirecTV receiver that lets you add a Secondary Market to the account. I tried this and it does add the local stations to the guide and I can bring up the channel but no video shows. Anyone have any experience with the Secondary Market feature? Is this something I can pay extra for? I live so close to the next county it would be great if I could get both.

That is ONLY if you are using an antenna - it changes NOTHING as to what comes in through the dish. The only way your dish locals get changed is by a CSR & if you have the right physical address.

Why should directv care as long as they are getting paid? I did it. I live 75 miles from Boston and want NESN and locals in HD. If Directv catches me and wants to cancel then I'll go back to Comcast. i really dont feel like putting an antennae from the 1960's on my rooftop

Aren't you the same guy complaining in another thread about superfan being a scam. Apparently you don't have a problem when you are doing the scamming.

This thread should be called “Friend lied to DirecTV and tricked them into breaking the law”.

How am I scamming? Im paying for every channel I watch. I watch the same NESN in HD that they want me to watch in SD.

In my town Directtv doesn't offer any locals. He put his billing zip of a town 45 mnins away that does offer locals. Now his box at home gets the locals! How is this possible? Will this really work! WOW!

Back in the days of big dishes, people who legally couldn't receive porn in the South would use a relative's zip somewhere else to have it turned on. It was a pretty common practice.

I don't remember the model number and don't know how well it would work in your area, but Radio Shack sells a little antenna that looks like a boomerang and costs about $20. Everybody in other forums rave about it for OTA.

People wouldn't go to this effort if the stations wouldn't be such jackasses about those of that can't receive HD. I can't get my ABC or NBC locals in HD no matter what I do. Neither of the stations will give me an HD waiver. I'm thinking about moving my address just 15 miles north into Georgia and I'll get the HDs plus I'll start getting Turner South. I have no sympathy at all for the stations and very little sympathy for D* or E* as they don't put up to much of a fuss with the networks. Thank God that they only time that it really matters is Saturdays in the Fall. The rest of the time the networks suck.

I think the Satellite companys ,D* and E* should by law also carry all the local networks that the cable companys carry in the local areas. That would end all this crap. But I know its not their fault:rolleyes:. But how come cable can do it but Satellite can't? My guess is it would cost too much money for all the bandwidth needed to provide these services to customers. But I know your all going to tell me its got nothing to do with that,But underneath it all I bet it has to do with money ,and nothing else.Cable will pay Satellite won't.Why else would you need a waver,Because the Satellite companys said I'm not paying for customers to get those channels,Why else when you do get a waver granted you still have to pay extra for each channel. Because IMO your picking up the tab that Satellite won't. Feel free to correct me.And its hard to even get wavers with Satellite ,Why? They want you to go with cable thats why.Cables a paying customer for this service ,Satellite is not.

It has always been those very same laws that have always prevented them from doing just that. For years they were fought tooth and nail just to get the LiL we have now. Complain to the FCC and the NAB for equality for DBS vs cable.

I saw in another thread here, that maybe congress will change that. I hope so!

E* Waivers

I used to be with Dish and I remember that you could apply for waivers over the internet even if they carried your locals. You could apply as many times as you liked, eventually the local station wouldn't respond (dispute) and they would turn them on. I had several out of market locals. I am unsure if they do that anymore. I know Direct doesnt do it.
Go buy the antenna, and remember all local HD signals are UHF only, you don't need a huge 80" VHF antenna, it is useless with HD.

Most digital channels are uhf, certainly not all, though.

I don't know where you get that. Two of my OTA HDs are VHF, assigned freqs of 2 and 5. Sounds like I need a VHF to me.

Is that their real channel, or remapped number? What are their call letters?
