NHL 2008-09 Season

They have owned the Habs this year and are flat out better.

There is no reason to fear them IF they meet in round 1- Halak is not a miracle-maker.

I hear ya, but it's still that Canadiens "mystique".

I recall a year (1984?) when the Bruins finished about 35 points ahead of the Canadiens in the regular season. However, they met in the first round of the playoffs and jumped on the back of rookie goalie Steve Penny for a four game sweep.

That was a best three-of-five series.

That format, IMO, seemed to favor the inferior teams.

From 1982-1986, 9 of 20 division winners lost in round 1 under this format (including 3 each in 1982 and 1986).

How else do you explain a 48-loss Maple Leaf team coming within a goal of making the Conference Finals in 1986?

The Rangers defeated Philadelphia, 2-1 and thus clinched the last Eastern Conference playoff berth......eliminating Florida.

The Flyers loss clinched the Atlantic Division for New Jersey.

The only thing left to determine in the East now is seedings.

The Predators beat the Red Wings 4-3 in a shootout.

This game is significant for two reasons:

1. Nashville has caught St. Louis for the eighth and final playoff spot with one game left for the Preds and 2 left for the Blues

2. The Sharks will be the official #1 seed for the West playoffs. It'll be the first time Detroit has not been the West's top-seed since 2002-03(!)

(This is NOT Red Wing bashing, BTW- this is a final score from a game that affects two parts of the Western Conference playoff race.)

Wow, big game affecting both the top and bottom of the Western Conference playoff picture.

The top three seeds are set in the East:

1. Boston (114 points)
2. Washington (108 points) (clinched the #2 seed tonight)
3. New Jersey (104 points) (clinched the Atlantic Division tonight)

There's a three way tie for the #4 seed:

4. Philadelphia (97 points) (2 games remaining)
5. Carolina (97 points) (1 game remaining)
6. Pittsburgh (97 points) (1 game remaining)

There's a two way tie for the #7 seed:

7. NY Rangers (93 points) (1 game remaining)
8. Montreal (93 points) (1 game remaining)

To summarize:

* Boston and Washington will play either NY Rangers or Montreal

* New Jersey will play either PHI, CAR, or PIT depending on who finishes with the #6 seed

* Two out of the PHI/CAR/PIT trio will meet

This means NOTHING to the Red Wings, winning the President's Cup in more of a curse than anything.
The Wings are the last team to actually win it all after winning the Reg. season.
It doesn't happen very often.

What DOES bother me is the Wings ability to LOSE games they have a lead in.
They were up 3-1 last night and managed to lose it.

Wings have to get it together or all the spectacular they can do on the offense will go wasted on the D side of things.

San Jose lost at home, 4-1 to Phoenix last night.

The Sharks are now three points ahead of the Bruins for the Presidents' Cup.

The Sharks have 117 points with one game remaining: at Los Angeles on Saturday. The Bruins have 114 points with two games remaining: at Buffalo on Sat. and at Islanders on Sunday.

If the Sharks win their game OR the Bruins lose a point in EITHER of their games, the Sharks will clinch best record.

If the Sharks lose in regulation OR lose in OT/SO AND the Bruins win BOTH games, the Bruins will clinch best record.

St. Louis is also in. Looks like we now have our 16 teams in the playoffs. It is now down to where each of the teams will finish in the rankings.

Vancouver defeated Colorado this afternoon, which means the Canucks win the Northwest Division and are the #3 seed in the West.

Calgary will now be the #5 seed and will play #4 Chicago in the first round.

That sucks. I really was hoping that Columbus would be playing Calgary in the first round.
