PC Owners Thread

Well another summer, another Steam sale gone by. Didn't pick up too much.

Wolfenstein: The New Order
Jackbox Party Pack Volume 2
The Walking Dead: Michonne
Game of Thrones: Telltale
Transformers: Devastation

Overall I'd say I did well for a total bill of less than $50

Doom 4 has received Vulkan API support. Short answer means you get better FPS.

Nice. Vulkan is basically the replacement for OpenGL and has all the same advantages DirectX12 has over DirectX11. The major difference is that Vulkan and OpenGL is multiplatform meaning developers could chose to run it on older versions of Windows, Mac, Linux or even the PS4 while DirectX 12 is owned by Microsoft and only runs on Windows 10 and Xbox One.

This doesn't stop DirectX from being much more popular than OpenGL/Vulkan. Most games on PC are running some version of DirectX instead.

Wow.... The person who ripped them off didn't even have the courtesy of including the 970 GPU. If you look at the other pictures in the thread you'll see that they just put the 970's cooler in the 1080 box and the actual GPU isn't there.

A lot of people buy the reference models like that, take the cooler off, and replace it with a water cooling block. My guess is that someone who was doing that bought a 1080 and returned it to the seller for a refund. They found a way to keep their water cooled 970 and get a 1080 for free. Since the cooler was in the box the seller probably thought everything was in order and sold it again.

Terry Crews (The Old Spice Guy) has ascended to the PC Master Race, and he's not messing around.

Terry Crews's rig is complete.

This was really cool to see but who the hell plays Rocket League with a keyboard and mouse? Get that kid an Xbox controller.

You can also tell this guy is a professional actor with those components. A $450 CPU, two $700 GPUs, an $840 SSD, and $800 Vive headset. I don't see a model for the monitor but I'm guessing that two curved monitors of that size are pretty pricey too. There aren't too many people who came out of inner city Flint Michigan who can afford a PC like that. Good for him.

Yeah he definitely spared no expense. Hell a 2 TB SSD is insane to me. I'll be lucky to get something higher than 512 GB when I make my new rig. And I'm definitely not doing SLI in the near future.

Yeah, I originally had a 240GB SSD to run Windows on and maybe 3 or 4 games I happened to be playing at any given time. Everything else was on a 2TB HDD. A while back I grabbed a Samsung 500GB SSD while it was on sale and put it in place of my HDD.

I could have left all 3 drives installed but my PC is only used for gaming and working from home. When we work from home we use a VPN and log into our work machines so I don't actually have any of my office software installed on my home PC. I also don't really have any media taking up space anymore since I stream everything these days. 740GB of SSD storage has been more than enough for what I do with my PC.

I got $77 from a RAM class action lawsuit I totally forgot about.

YMMV, but some people have had success getting 20% credit refunds from Amazon.

I just contacted amazon support to try my luck with this. As soon as I said the words "class action lawsuit" I was immediately transferred to a supervisor specialist department and he quickly shot me down. He looked up the class action lawsuit and said that since the lawsuit was against Nvidia and not Amazon I would need to contact them directly. I thought it was probably too good to be true since the class action suit said we get $30 while 20% of my $330 purchase price would be $66.

I haven't gone to the effort of seeing exactly what is necessary to get the settlement directly from Nvidia yet. Since I technically have receipts for 2 970s even though I only paid for one of them it might be possible to get $60 if they give me credit for both cards. If they require serial numbers I won't be able to get credit for anything since I sold both cards though.

Either way, I can't complain too much since I used these 970s for a year and a half and then sold them for more than I paid. Selling the 2 of them to buy a 1070 while still making putting $50 cash in my pocket (after selling and shipping costs) is pretty tough to beat.

PSA: DO NOT download anything from Fosshub. The site was compromised and MBR (Master Boot Record) corruptors were put into popular files.
