If there is anything illegal in what Motorola is trying to do it will be a federal case which means FBI involvement. Could result in a court order freezing Motorola from doing anything until investigation is done which could be months or years.
Be interesting to see what would happen if criminal behavior is discovered on the part of the parties involved.

There is nothing illegal with a business decision to end part of their business, which is exactly what they are doing. They set a pre-determined date to shutdown and if they keep to it then fine. However, if they intentionally try to cause harm to your equipment by a continuation of their signals being sent out over the satellites after that set date then you may have a case against them.
What has been going on is mostly a sad misguided practice of deception by a program re-seller who has allowed deceit and lies to scare and trick people into buying a small dish set-up.

I have seen notices being sent out where some of the programmers are now discontinuing their programs from being sold to the big dish market but if people can live without their programming then it will be their bottom line that will hurt. I guess the big dish market is really too small for them to deal with at this time.
The big dish is returning to a point now where it is really for the true hobbyist and to those of us that are left it really makes no difference as to what they are going to sell anyway.
It is sad in a way to see this day come but it was inevitable.
Motorola basically abandoned the 4DTV market back in 2002-2003 when they made the decision not to produce more receivers for the big dish. They fired those who had worked diligently for them to market the 4DTV receivers, like Joe Cornwall, & Mark Thevenot back in that time.
Those who were still left fought for their jobs, as in the so called 'guide-lady' who many times was going to be replaced but fought to keep her position.

I am surprised that the 4D lasted this long actually.

Skyvision has posted their own version of instructions.

I like the part where they come right out and tell you:

Motorola has issued a Seven Step Procedure to convert your 4DTV receiver to access this system.
DO NOT do this procedure until JANUARY 4th.
Please be advised the SEVEN STEP PROCEDURE will eliminate access to ALL other satellites other than W5 (now known as X4).

If you wish to retain your satellites in memory, please follow the ALTERNATE PROCEDURE

I have X4 programmed in and am receiving the audio on the DMX channels. I did that three weeks ago. In the meantime I have parked my dish on the G4-16 satellite.
I don't want to lose the other satellites I am using for the C-Band reception on my FTA receiver. I haven't moved the dish since then.
At this point I have no subscription on W5 or X4 (I allowed my Skyvision sub to expire in November pending on where the 4DTV situation is heading). Do I need to wait until Jan. 5th to call for a rehit? I am planning to have subscriptions when all the choices become available.

I followed the instructions at http://www.skyvision.com/pages/4DTV_letter.pdf under "Alternate Procedure" I have the X4 satellite programmed in, still have my W5 channels and still have the programming guide.

I hope you know your still running on EMM 4096 right now not 4160. Can't change that till 1/4 sometime in the afternoon when the computer switches from the Motorola to the Comcast SAC.

Ah ok, I thought it sounded like the "alternate method" was something I was supposed to do prior to the 4th. I'm still trying to figure this stuff out. Anyone know a good site where we can see a channel guide if the programming guide goes down ?

I myself plan to set up a old DirecTV receiver to use for a guide. I'm going to program the favorites to only show the channels I get on W5/X4 and just use the TV input button to switch between it and the 4DTV. Walla, On screen guide without needing the computer.

I did that before since the 4D guide was buggy and it works well. I still do it with my subbed Direct STB. I have a idea to try to see if we can get the guide to work with the HITS network steam. I will post this brainstorm at my website soon. All can try it if they want. It won't be able to be tested till the 4096 EMM is pulled though and we get our IRD's authed for 4160.

The C side coax on my 920 has been disconnected now for about a month so I haven't gotten any updates for that length of time. I turned my power pass splitters to let my AZBox power the LNBs and use the 920 to move the dish and change polarity.

So my question is, since I have NO sub and no feedback to my 920, if I connect the C LNB coax back up after 1/4 will the 4160 EMM automatically update or authorize my 920 again or will I have to make a phone call to SRL to have that done, and or, will they do it for me without a sub? I do have the X4 tile but don't have it "active". I'm going to wait for a while until the smoke clears before I think about paying for TV again.

To get the conversion to 4160 you need to call SRL and get a hit with some programming or use websams after 1/4.

Can't use Websams cuz it won't work with Linux. Been there, done that a few months ago! Won't do anything I want secure online with Windowz cuz I've been screwed by keyloggers before! So that only leaves paying for a hit with a sub. Looks like it will be a while then. Thanks

Thanks, I'll take a look at those. I was looking for something customizable so I don't have to wade through all the channels. I'm only using the pick 10 for W5. The other satellite I really use is T7 for radio http://crntalk.com/ and Radio America (T7 895 Radio America, T7 894 CR4talk radio, T7 893 CR3 Talkradionetwork 3) since I dont get radio or tv to speak of here over the air (1 fuzzy PBS tv station) too many mountains and trees I guess.

Heh, I just log into WebSAMS with my fingerprint. No entering password with keyboard needed.

What browsers have you tried using in Linux? Have you tried Seamonkey? It looks like Netscape. SeaMonkey: Download & Releases WebSAMS works in the windows FireFox so I'd think it would work on the linux one.

Have you tried TitanTV.com? It allows you to make a custom guide. Not all channels there, probably not what your watching on T7.

I just tried logging into my websams account in Fedora 13 with Firefox as browser....it does indeed work.
Suggest looking at your browser settings.

Thanks, looking now. It does seem to be what I'm looking for, you're right it's ignoring satellite talk radio (t7 or think now it's EchoStar 9/Galaxy 23 now ) Hope when people do the autoscan on the recievers they don't forget that one.
