The "new" iPad Announcement / Discussion Thread

I think Apple did a better job stocking iPads in larger numbers this time. The whole limited stock thing gets old eventually. And why not produce enough? It makes happy customers.

I was pleasantly pleased that BB actually had some iPad (3rd) accessories on hand; last year it took a LONG TIME before anybody had any decent iPad 2 accessories.

Yes, plus there were 35 times the number of outlets on Friday compared to when I went for ipad1. Also heard they sold 1 million through the online preorder that were shipped.

I guess many buyers can thank you preorderers for cutting down on the number of people that would normally rush the store and buy up all their inventory. :D

And I didn't have to stand in line with them! (I wouldn't have anyway, but the preorder was a great way to get one without having to to drive 25 miles to the Apple Store.)

Just did a study on The NIP (New iPad) and I have to say wow...what a screen..The hype is for real this thing is a beast! Cant wait to see what people do to take advantage of this!

I would like Apple to add camera video stream to iCloud so we would not need sync to send video taken on iPhone to iPad.

Thought I would post this SpeedtTest result. This is on a laptop connected to Verizon LTE via my new iPad serving as a Personal Hotspot. ;)

Just to be clear, the speedtest results I posted above are not representative at all! I posted them just as my personal record - I've never seen the numbers like that ever before! But keep in mind that this was in the area with very strong LTE reception, where the Verizon store happens to be located.

At my house, which is just a couple of miles away, I only get 1-2 bars on Verizon LTE and the download speed is just around 5 Mbps, and the upload speed is around .5 Mbps, which is no better (and in fact is worse) than AT&T's 3G on my iPhone. And when the iPad falls back to its 3G, the Internet becomes way too slow! Of course I don't need the cellular data at home, as I use Wi-Fi. So, this is not a concern for me. But my point is this: don't expect that your 4G will always be lightning fast. It will all depend on where you are located and how busy the network is at the moment.

Later this year I am going to travel with this iPad, then I will see how well it really works on the road.

Update on my situation..

Well the good news is that after a restore and setting up as a new iPad my downloading app problems are finally gone.

The bad news is that I lost all my gaming data, so for all my games that had progress on them it was wiped out, including half a season of nba jam, about 90% of scribblenauts, and nearly 2 hours of work in Ghost Trick.

Overall I'm satisfied to not have a borked iPad anymore, but having the stuff deleted does kinda suck..

Apps crashing...

I had a couple of apps crash on me (close unexpectedly). Different apps, including TomTom. Only happens occasionally, no pattern. Not good! :(
I don't know if some apps are just not fully compatible yet with the new iPad, or if there is a more serious problem. I'll keep an eye on it.

Has anyone else had any apps close unexpectedly on the new iPad?

Its happened before. If the app has not been made ready for the retina-display, and is graphic intensive (like, say Tom Tom) I would not be surprised if it crashes. I am unable to use UPad anymore, the app just isn't playing well with the super-HD screen.

There's a report that Verizon iPad 3's work on AT&T's network (although not with LTE speeds obviously.) Anyone confirm this?

I can confirm. This is what I posted a few pages back:

Ok, I just tried a sim card from AT&T flavored iPad 2 in my New Verizon iPad and sure enough, I got the AT&T logo! Cool!
I understand I will not be able to get LTE speeds in that case, but it did display 4G (which I think means HSPA+)! :D

I'm sure it works fine with LTE in the areas where AT&T has LTE service. The HSPA+ service should work fine too.

No, actually it will not work on LTE, other than Verizon's. It will fall back to 3G or HSPA+, which is still pretry good!

Sorry, I missed the Verizon iPad part of the message. My bad...

The AT&T-flavored iPad will of course work on AT&T's own LTE network, but it's not clear on what other LTE networks can it be used. For sure, it will not work on Verizon's network, regardless of the speed.
So, from this standpoint, the Verizon flavor of the iPad gives you more options. Not only Verizon has better 4G coverage, and not only it supports tethering for free, but if you ever get to the area with poor reception on Verizon, you can get a prepaid sim from another operator and run it at HSPA+ speed. Pretty cool, especially if you travel a lot and require reliable Internet wherever you go.

And in case you guys are wondering, no, I am not going to try the sim card from my iPhone in the iPad! ;)
No way I am risking my unlimited data plan! :D
