Bonds Stands Alone #756 *

They didn't test for it, because baseball was in a bad way after the strike. They needed fans to get back into the seats. The best way to do that is "the long ball". So while baseball turned away, certain players satisfied baseball's need and baseball was back on track as America's past time. Now, like any good pusher, the addict gets caught and the pusher denies any involvement. Bud Selig should be ashamed as he was the head of the group of owners who helped oust Fay Vincent, and Fay Vincent was responsible for getting steroids on the list of substances not to be used. Selig knows exactly what happened as he was as much as acting as the pusher's agent.

And Steroids DO NOT build muscle, they speed up healing and the rebuilding of cells. My mother is going thru Chemotherapy and they give her Steroids as part of her treatment, and its to help the body to recover faster.

Not totally true.

InfoFacts - Steroids (Anabolic-Androgenic)
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are man-made substances related to male sex hormones. “Anabolic” refers to muscle-building, and “androgenic” refers to increased masculine characteristics. “Steroids” refers to the class of drugs. These drugs are available legally only by prescription, to treat conditions that occur when the body produces abnormally low amounts of testosterone, such as delayed puberty and some types of impotence. They are also prescribed to treat body wasting in patients with AIDS and other diseases that result in loss of lean muscle mass. Abuse of anabolic steroids, however, can lead to serious health problems, some irreversible.

Perhapa abetter way to say it is that they d0 not directly build muscle mass but they make it easer for an athlete to do that by speeding healing time.

In any event athletes that ake it do so in order to build muscle mass.

The bottom lines are:

1. They do not help you see, hit or acquire the skills needed to be a great hitter.

2. They were not banned, nor tested for during any of the times in question.

3. There is really no way to substantially prove, 110% beyond ANY doubt, that ANY player in the "non-banned" "non-testing" time frame knowingly took them. The same holds true for back in the day of all the "heroes" that are now having their records assaulted. We didn't test for anything then and have no idea what they may have been on at the time. Lets start some mass media rumoring and bashing on them; dead or alive and taint all their records and accomplishments with no way to prove the case and see what happens.

4. So the time has come to:

a. Admit that if this were any nice guy player such as pre-congress Mark McGuire we would not be bashing.

b. Adopt strict new bans, testing and punishments, AND drop all the speculative hearsay and banter by people simply trying to make money, sell books, take players down the drain, or just hate on Barry, etc. and just .........................

MOVE ON ALREADY!

And this is all coming from a Dodger loving Giants hater.. I say congrats Barry; you deserve the record (w/o asterisk)!

I really think Bonds body armor has provider a much larger advantage than his adventures in chemistry. If Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth could have gone after inside pitches like Bonds who's to tell how many home runs they would have ended up with.

Actually steroids were banned---just not tested for. A ridiculous system but let's not assume that the lack of testing means that it was OK to use them.

As for not giving you the skills that is correct but no one ever said that it did. The claim is that steroids provide an advantage in one area---physical strength and that the rules prohibit that.

the really sad thing here is that Bonds is a great athlete. Even those who say he used steroids admit that he would likely have hit a lot of home runs and when you add to that the fac t that he has stolen over 500 bases and that in his prime he was one of the game's better outfielders it is unfortuante that it has all come to this.

Thank You Charper1. You're a gentleman that really loves the game of baseball.

1) apparantely they do help you hit the ball farther.

2) I may be wrong , but aren't steroids illegal. except for medical use?

3) I can't prove the Easter bunny actually doesn't exist either, but I'm pretty sure that he doesn't. Just because he wasn't caught, due to a lack of testing, doesn't mean he didn't use steroids.

Mr. Bonds, you may have the record, but you don't have my respect. You may have sold your soul for the record, but I hope your family doesn't suffer when the bill comes due. (The health problems that come with steroid abuse).

I agree nice touch by Hank Aaron.
I thought it was a well deserved back handed slap by not showing up in person. Same for the Commish. "I had to recognize your accomplishment but Ill be damned if I will go to a game to watch a steriod created ape break my record so I put this sh*t on tape. Now go A-ROD!"

Like Him Or Not ( I Dont) He Has To Come Up When You Talk About The Best Ever To Play The Game.

And If You Do Talk About That, Please Put My Name In The Mix.

Steroids can be used to speed up the healing process. This would have been common especially with athletes straining muscles, etc. You can virtually find a doctor anywhere who will prescribe anything you desire. Thus the illegality factor is out the window. Further as you'll remember, it wasn't that long ago where you could still buy andro and HGH over the counter. And I'm talking about a couple of years. With Bonds, you're talking about a guy who apparently had enough "man" in him and enough ability to hit 46 dingers in 1993. Was he on steroids back then as well? Further, he has hit 23 home runs this year in only 269 at bats and he's 43 years old!!! Di you think he's still on the juice?

THAT was a GREAT interview and reminicient of the days of Clemente. He was treated the same way with the Pittsburgh media. Clemente use to ALWAYS complain that the Pittsburgh media would state he was faking or as they use to call it, "jaking injuries". What is the deal with the Pittsburgh media?

Cybok??

They call it as they see it.:D Unfortunately I'm not old enough to remember Clemente.:( But Bonds deserved everything he received. He was arrogant against the fans, media and fellow players.

1990-1992 he was terrible in the playoffs, and I think that is why Pittsburgh fans despise him, not the steroids, but choking in the playoffs and being a jerk.

You are correct that they are illegal except in certain circumstances. moreover charper was incorrect in saying that they were not banned during the period. they we re first banned in 2002 and the terms of that ban were sttrengthened in 2005. As we have beaten to death in this thread they were banned but there was no testing at that time. That may seem ridiculous but it was the case.

And yes while steroids do not directly make you hit more home runs they do give you a leg up on one of the things that helps that---developing physical strength. i think it ii disingenous in the extreme to state that they do not help you acquire the "skills" to hit home runs. Strength is not a skill but it helps to hit home runs. that is why players take them.

i have no evidence that eh is on steroids mow and given the testing, the BALCO case, and the Mitchell inestigation he would be crazy to be on them now.

yes his 1993 stats were impressive---along with his 2007 ones. But what leads people to think he was "juiced" at some point is the the BALCO investigation and the incredible increase in his home run output around the turn of the century. Citing his production proves he is a good athlete but does not prove or disprove whether he was using steroids during the years in question. interestingly his 73 hom e run was not during the period of the formal ban but several other years were and his 73 home run year was one of the factors that put pressure on baseball to enact a ban.
