Browns Hire Mangini

Bills, Jags, two games with the Bengals, and playing two not-so-great divisions: That's a possible 10 wins!

I would never call Denver, San Diego, Jacksonville, Chicago and Minnesota easy wins. Plus I never consider any game within the division an easy game.

The BIG One - WTAM 1100

Former Jets coach to take over for Romeo Crennel. (Cleveland) - The Cleveland Browns have signed Eric Mangini as their next head coach.

Mike Trivisonno was first with the story during his show Wednesday afternoon.

Mangini was named head coach of the New York Jets on January 17, 2006.

In recognition of the success Mangini had in his first season in New York, he was named 2006 AFC Coach of the Year.

The 2007 season under Mangini was less fruitful for the Jets, who went 4–12 during the regular season, failing to qualify for the playoffs.

The 2008 season started differently for the Jets, as they went 8-3, including a win over then undefeated Tennessee Titans.

But the Jets managed just a 1-4 record after, which was not enough to make the playoffs and they finished third in their division.

On December 29, after missing out on the playoffs for a second straight year, Mangini was fired.

What is it with all these Belli-cheat disciples going to the Clowns?

I just heard a very interesting stat....

Of the last 10 Super Bowl Champions, 8 of the 10 teams won with head coaches on their second NFL Head Coaching job.......

Dungy, Shanahan, Belichick, Coughlin, Vermeil, Gruden. They all improved greatly in their second NFL head coaching stint and seemed to have used their past experience to improve the second time around.

Hmmm. Maybe Jammies is onto something here! :)

you have a strong and valid point here;) at 1st I was also questioning this move but the more you think about it the better this decision looks. My concern is hiring the coach before the GM. how do you know they're going to get along? there might be different opinions on what the coach thinks he needs and what the coach would consider great talent in a draft to what the future GM wants or thinks what is best for the team. unless i'm mistaken and the browns already hired a GM.

besides that i'm pretty confident that mangini will do a better job the 2nd time around.

I wouldn't have put Chucky in the "improved" group. He was d*mn good with the Raiders before he left on his own volition.

Technically, the Patriots are the third HC stop for Belichick. He was the HC for Jets for a few hours in 1999. :D

When Parcells stepped down as head coach in 1999, Belichick became the new Jets head coach. However, Belichick's introduction to the media the following day turned out to be a surprise resignation announcement.

i'm just not sure why hire mangini. it can't be based on what he did in NY. maybe something we don't know about?

Mangini started here in Cleveland. Just like everybody else that is in New England right now.
All started here in Cleveland. The owner knowns Mangini. Mangini's brother in law is the Cleveland Indians GM Shaprio. Family affair! lol So with all that said. He knows. He knows what it is to be a Browns fan. He knows the pain we have here. I will wait and see how it goes. I wish him the best of luck.

Jets fans, can you comment on Mangini? Is he a no-nonsense type of guy? A disciplinarian? How is he at evaluating talent? How about in-game tactical decisions?

Mangini was second-guessed all season on his in-game play callling. He called 4 run plays that went no-where from the 2 yard line in an early season game (instead of letting Favre try a play-action pass) - and other similar things.

Also, with 2 weeks left to go in the season, Newsday (big local paper) actually had an article that the Jets would NOT make the playoffs because he would be outcoached by BOTH Bills. Bill Belichick in NE, and Bill Parcells (thru Sparano) in Miami. Point is, he was not generally viewed as a motivator, not viewed as a good game manager as well.

But many coaches do learn from their mistakes and the second job works out much better. Just remember that the JETS spent like 140 million this year to upgrade the team and it still folded a large 2 game division lead (and against some 'easy' opponents in the last 5 weeks. the only game they won in the last 5 weeks was due to the BONEHEAD play by Buffalo at the end of that game where they turned the ball over to the JETS instead of killing the clock.

That's a very interesting stat.

I take it the two that won a title in their first gig are Billick and Cowher?

Yes. You are correct.

Thanks :up

BTW, the only way that stat can be extended to 9 out of the last 11, is Tom Coughlin winning another Super Bowl.

Norv Turner is on his third head coaching gig, and the rest are on their first.

The more I think about this hiring, the more I understand it.

Mangini coached the NYJ 3 years and had 2 winning seasons. The Browns have had 2 winning seasons total since 1999.

Mangini is now considered an experienced head coach and has dealt in the very challenging NY media. Cleveland eats, drinks and sleeps football. They have a huge fan base and are growing angy of the losing. The fans and media will be tough on him. Mangini, more than anyone should be prepared for that.

Also, it has already been speculated that Baltimore Player of Personnel, George Kokinis is their top GM choice and hasn't been hired yet simply because the Ravens are still in the playoffs. Kokonis and Mangini are close friends and used to work together when they started their careers with the Browns. Since they are mutual friends, I would expect them to get along and share the GM/Head Coaching duties rather well.

Besides, Mangini had to be one of the top coaching candidates available. Cowher made it clear that he isn't going anywhere for at least another year. Shanahan has been on vacation and isn't taking interview requests. Of the other candidates, most have no head coaching experience or are college candidates (Steve, Spagnola, Josh McDaniels, Jason Garrett and Kirk Ferentz).

Now introducing the new coach for your Cleveland Browns....

"It is really special to be back here, where I got my first opportunity," said Mangini. "I have a very distinct vision of what I want to build. Having talented players with character, players selflessly driving toward the same goal. I'm going to be vigilant about that."

"You learn so much from your experiences," he said. "I tell players, win or lose, be honest. I ask myself that all the time. Nobody stops improving. I learned so many things over three years. There's no Dummies guide to head coaching."

I'm sold. Hail ManGenius our faithful new leader!!!!!!!! :D
