Please Help w/ Setup

I've been using a standard receiver at tailgates for 10 years. I'm trying to switch to an HD setup this year and had success last week after being told to change my dish type to 04 by someone at DirecTV. The tech said it was odd that dish type 04 worked, but it was the only way we could get an HD picture after he had me try several things. I could not get anything to work this week. I tried various dish types within the setup menu, two different receivers, two different coax cables, and three different dishes.

I am using an HD23-600 receiver and a slimline dish with the green SWM sticker on it. I normally use this receiver in my bedroom and it's part of my whole home DVR (the box is just HD, not HD DVR). Do I need to purchase one of the black SWM boxes, a power inserter, etc.? I'll try to include pics of the LNB and SWM I have at home (it's in my garage where I currently do not have a receiver). Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it a HR23 or a H23 (the DVR is a HR23)
edit: since you mention both lines I assume its a DVR then...a HR23

the good news is the H23 & HR23 both have the BBC in it so if you went with a non SWM setup you still would be fine. But if you went SWM that is what you'd need (the LNB and the power inserter)

The big difference between SWM and non-SWM is in this case SWM requires only one line whereas the non SWM requires 2 lines to the receiver

It's an H23. It is not a DVR.

But the above still is fine. The H23 works with both non swm and swm setups so you can get either setup. You can also just get a SL3 LNB which sees 99, 101 & 103. 99 & 103 are the HD sats

Please forgive my tech ignorance, but what type of LNB is in the picture I posted?

I talked to three different DirecTV techs yesterday and they all seemed to think the problem was my receiver is on a SWM system at home but I don't have the black SWM box at my tailgate. When we'd try to change the dish setup in the internal settings to a 02: Multi Line Switch, the receiver would not recognize it and was reverting back to dish type 18.

What's confusing is why it worked two weeks ago for 8+ hours but no one could figure out how to get it working yesterday.

I also have access to a non SWM Slimline that has three LNBs. You mentioned above that I could use that but it would require two lines running to the receiver. My receiver only has a hookup for one line.

that is a SWM setup....a SWM5 to be exact
picks up 99,101,103,110,119

110 has nothing on it
119 has some locals in SD

I thought you had a DVR.....you only need one line from the LNB to the receiver with what you have

If you are using a swm lnb, then you have to have the power inserter. Not using it could damage the H23, so make sure you use one. You need the 21 volt type.

I appreciate the responses. If I'm understanding the two of you correctly, all I need to get is a 21v power inserter and that should allow my receiver to recognize the dish when I'm using it away from the house. Is there any other equipment I need? If I get the power inserter, should I leave the dish selection as type 18 as it is in my home setup in the picture or change it to something else?

If you have the same type of lnb, either a 3 or 5, then you should use the same dish selection as your home setup. If not, find the right one and choose it instead.
