DISH 2016 CES Press Event

Honest question...what is the difference between your current Cat5 setup and the standard "over MoCA"? Just wondering if there is an an advantage to one over the other.
Not sure of the terms, but my current setup uses powerline Ethernet adapters for the Joeys, so that I can move them from room to room. Only the Hopper and one other room in the house have coax available.

Great job Scott! Thanks for all you do.

I have been a Dish customer for just under 2 months with HWS, SJ, & Joey. Any idea what my upgrade options will be?

Out of Dish's 14 million customers, how many do you really think would care? I know a lot of people here would but how many is that even? Are we talking a few thousand?
I see this all time on Dish Support Forum message like this Hdd failure... Again, etc, etc
I bet at lease 1/3 to 1/2 lease hopper that come back where just failure.
So if had the option are your tell me you wouldn't make use of it ?, There was a time then I wish it had when the harddrive had failure even on a lease model and I bet a lot other wish it has swap removeable drive bay even thoses who bougth out right.

Again why spend the money? Out of the millions of hopper out there only a very small amount come back due to hard drive failures. And the amount of people who actually buy there own is small. Again not worth the cost.

If you want your stuff backed up back it up to an external hard drive.

Yep, the H3 does support HDR. As posted elsewhere on SatGuys:
Technical Specs

Hopper 3 is powered by a Broadcom BCM7445 quad-core ARM application processor at 1.5 GHz, 21K DMIPS. It contains a two TB hard drive for up to 500 hours of high-definition recording (or 2,000 hours of standard definition recording). For 4K viewing, the Hopper 3 can decode and output 60 FPS and 10-bit color. It supports H.264 and H.265 and is compatible with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. It is the first DVR to support USB 3.0. Hopper 3 is compatible with HDR10/BDA 2.0 encoded streams.

I've actually had two HDDs fail and the latest replacement has been buzzing something fierce (which now won't be a problem because I intend to switch to the H3). Each time they didn't stop dead, there were warning signs that enabled me time to back everything up. And for the few days it took DIRT to get a new one in my hands between watching live and On Demand it really wasn't as big a deal as I made it up to be in my mind. Totally agree, why spend the money even if on the lease the net difference is only $2.

Scott just dosen't see the bigger picture of things it not about just backup.
Gee I recall a time when everybody was saying 4 tuner was more then enough but also depend of size of your family and most well know common problem with min show not have a reg time slot and about half time recording end up stop before the show has really at the end which why we have add more overtime to the rec time in are fav and there other thing that you to take in count for and as you can see that the not case you all herad from CEO.
For me at one point in time I had as min 10 up to Tuner going under SageTV with 3x2TB = 6TB not counting the other media storeage drive for DVD/Blu-ruy Moive, Photo, Muisc and Home Video
DVR Tech is catch up and getting better all time I just hope that this Hopper 3 is hell lot better then the Hopper 2 and Joey to as there are day I just want thur that thing out a window and believe or not the Super Joey work really good.

Wonder what sort of training the Installers will have. I've had horrible experiences with 3/4 of the installers that Dish sent in here in the past. I'm talking a combination of technical knowledge and courtesy to respect a person's home.

Don't need to hear how the installer doesn't get paid enough to do a good job. The Dish products are amazing and service is great but I am paranoid to let the these guys at my HT wiring with his wire snipers and hammer drill.
Same here buddy, and I was even a former tech

If you already have a hopper there won't be any extra work the tech needs to do. Just swap out the LNB, node and receivers. Very easy.

Scott just dosen't see the bigger picture of things ....

Dude! Seriously? Scott doesn't see the big picture? You joined this forum barely two-and-a-half weeks ago and have a total of 15 posts and you're calling out Scott for not seeing the big picture? The fact is, Scott does see the big picture and he has worked his butt off for years to show it to everyone here. Just because you don't like what you saw doesn't make him wrong.

Nearly everything you have posted has had a negative slant, including this beauty in post #1:
What New Hopper ?, Far as I know of it just skin job changing Blue to Black Theme.
There is new Joey
But any case the Hopper is still a joke

If you're not careful, you are going to earn a reputation here and your contributions will not be taken seriously. My advice to you is, rather than being argumentative at every turn, use this forum to glean valuable information from those who have years of experience not only with this forum but with the satellite industry as a whole. And by all means, before you post anything as fact, do your research.

Do you have these in an enclosed cabinet where they are overheating? That is very unusual to lose 1 let alone 2 hard drives that fast.

You sir are part of the TINY picture which is why you won't see what you want on the Hopper 3.

I am not arguing the fact that backing up is worth it, what I am saying is for the 99.9% of DISH customers out there it makes zero sense at all to add that functionality when it won't be used except by the 0.1%.

Again you have the option of using external hard drives if you want to back up your stuff. Nice part about it almost any USB drive will work and unlike other companies you don't need to try finding a ESATA drive, nor unlike other companies when you plug in the drive it does not disable the built in hard drive.

Scott,

Did you find out if original Joeys will get swapped out for the newer version if one upgrades from a Hopper to H3?

I see a couple of things that you may not be giving due consideration:

1. Most SageTV configurations (certainly not all) are recording MPEG2 and as such, the recordings require considerably more storage. I suppose scripted (or daemonized) transcoding would be possible, but certainly not a mainstream thing.

2. It is exceedingly unlikely that DISH's programming vendors would allow DISH to directly place content where it is readily accessible (i.e. SAMBA shares). DIRECTV seems to have avoided archiving like the plague and even TiVo is careful about HD transfers.

3. I'm pretty sure there is a hard ceiling on how many recordings you can currently save (I believe it is around 1,000). I have lots of one hour shows and a number of movies totaling almost 600 programs and there's still some room left. I'm not sure how large the user space is, but it is a good deal less than 2TB. Clearly the limit could be upped, but the overhead involved may become onerous; especially without across the board folder support.

We see about HDMI 2.0 from my beauty post #1 but hopelee I'm wrong but one can even know in tell we get them in our hands as I all ready got a blu-ray play with HDMI 2.0 that will work not with RCA TV but dose work LG TV go figure.
No joined a long time and I ready posted that once before but my profile was not here for some off wall reason as the last time I was here I think that was 2012 I don't recall off hand when but I did ask 1st Hopper and for some wire help and some one here posted pdf on rigth way to do it.
Read my other post to Scott about hard drive, any way then in a year from now I'm beating on next year Dish dose add more harddrive to next hopper I come back to this post here see look I told you so, I know what happing and believe me one harddrive is not good enough Fiveft20in let alone with 16 Tuners or 10 with one harddrive it is just bearly good enough for 8 tuner and with few playback at some time but I think 6 is the more idea sweetspot with out causing data corruption unless you used good awful low bitrate or if it had SSD that has speed to wirte and read that much data all at same time.
I have had PC DVR for 15 years I know what works and what dosen't.
Keep in mind dish only dose mostly in house testing and I'm sure there few outsider tester as well but it never the same as real world testing soon as ever one get there hand on them.
P.S. it has nonething to do with negative slant post or what ever I'm sure Scott nice guy but if he can't see my point view other then (Again why spend the money?) then that tell me he dosen't see big pciture has ever built PC DVR or own a real Standalone DVR this big my guest is no.
