DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

I chatted with a CSR this morning trying to see what they'd do for me. He first offered me Cinemax free for 3 months. I just downgraded from the Everything Package because I dont watch enough TV in the summer to justify it, so I declined. A CSR from their Facebook page had already offered me the Hopper for $100 last month if I wanted that, so I ask this CSR in chat if he could do something better. He hooked me up with the "loyalty dept" and she said they could do the Hopper free. I was willing to do it right then, but she kept adding stuff. I wound up with: 1) free Hopper; 2) $10 off bill for 12 months; 3) 1/2 off HBO/Starz for 6 months; 4) 1/2 off Blockbuster @ Home for 6 months; 5) Online coupon for $5 off bill for 24 months.

Can you say WOW! Thats a heck of a deal you got.I'm not complaining as we got a roku and multisport free for 6mos but,how in the world do some get such good deals and others seem to get very little?

I agree. It seems so arbitrary sometimes. I honestly was just trying to get some PPV coupons and a little scratch off of my monthly bill originally.

They have a system they rate customers by, 1 star to 5 star. This is probably a large factor in what they offer you. As for the $600-700 upgrade charge to hopper/Joey, sounds like they're requiring you to purchase the boxes, usually due to a poor credit rating.

Yes I know,that said I really have a hard time believing they are using the 1 to 5 star rating on these roku/credits/free hopper upgrades.I have seen several recent customers getting these deals even some with welcome pack or AT120.Its almost as if you catch a loyalty rep in a good mood or a bad mood kind of deal.

just when people with Dish want to switch to DirecTV over the AMC networks, boom, DirecTV gets into a dispute with Viacom with all of the Viacom owned channels possibly getting removed tonight. but as i said in the DirectTV dispute thread, at least they have a chance of getting these channels within a month of removal, unlike us Dish customers who have Charlie Cheapo deciding to say F*** you to the AMC Networks after the contract expired without even trying negotiate a new deal to keep the channels on.

I didn't expect Dish to make a deal with AMC. I've been with them plenty long enough to have experienced other carriage issues and will probably witness even more. For me, the writing was on the wall that it would be removed and the investment in the Roku boxes leads me to believe it probably isn't coming back. Price is a factor to me which is why I only have Dish America. That said, I find the issues DirecTV is now facing to be quite alarming as well. While you may be correct with the idea that those networks stand a better chance of returning in short time, I find myself wondering what the average bill may look like within 10 years. I'm also curious about what measures may be taken (more streaming, theme packs, etc) may come along or become more advanced to help the average consumer cope with the cost.

You know why you rarely hear of Cable companies balking at increases from ESPN, or Viacom, or AMC? Because the attitude of Cable companies, is just pass those increases onto their customers. They tend to feel that their customer can't go anywhere else so screw them. At least Dish and now DirecTV recognize that to stay competitive they need to have costs make sense.

You know what would be great... If DirecTV dropped AMC and Dish dropped Viacom. To hell with both of them and their crappy overpriced channels.

And those cable companies will reap the benefits when they have the channels people want to watch.
