Will you pay a premium for an iPhone 8 (X)?

OK- HERE's the Big Question: Now that they've used 8 and "ten" - what will the next iPhone be called?

Btw it is not being posted Apple and AT&T will be charging $10 a month to use the cellular feature on the series 3 watch.

Dang it! I'm not paying $10/month to use a watch/phone on my wrist. Watch is now off the list!

ATV 4K is still firmly on.

BTW, on the ATV the SSD storage is used for apps and also as storage space for video streams, IOW it actually records the stream if it comes faster than it needs to while playing, or at least that is what I was told. Of course, they don't say it records it and you can't 'see' the recorded file.

Thanks. I skipped the prior ATV due to the lack of 4K support. Pretty sure the 32GB should be fine.

Very pleasantly surprised about upgrading prior purchases and the pricing on new ones.

I need to upgrade my 5s. Was looking at an 8, but 64 not enough, 256 too much. I'll opt for a less expensive 128gb 7 at $649. I'm sure retailers will have sales in the coming weeks, to sweeten the deal.

You should really wait until the 8 is actually available and if possible, until the X is. Prices for the 7 are likely to drop as each becomes available.

Leo Laporte was talking about that and said if they released it it would need approval from the FDA.
This may be based on the mRhythm study that started five years ago for Android Watch and expanded to include more recent Apple Watch efforts of Cardiogram:

Could a smart watch save you from a stroke? Contribute your Apple Watch and Android Wear data to save lives.

Cardiogram raises $2 million to predict heart health issues using wearables

This level of app would likely need a third party to assume some or most of the medical liability.

I have the 7+ 128gb, its so dumb they are going to make only the 64gb and 256gb versions, leaving the 128gb version is so stupid. I won't be upgrading to the 8+ because its not really an upgrade, maybe a little faster and the glass back is not enough for me to upgrade and the camera honestly what I have now works fine.

I had mixed feelings about the X, it looks nice, but I am not sold on the Face ID tech, in the live preview you saw they were having a minor hiccup getting it to work, that to me spells disaster, a fist gen version is not gonna be perfect and its gonna have issues, the touch ID to me was very practical, the face thing requires your attention to unlock it. I don't find Face ID innovative at all, my 8 year old alienware laptop had that technology unlocking devices by looking at your face, maybe it wasn't as refined as the apple face ID but its no breakthrough tech really, they just used old stuff. Its way easier to put your finger at the checkout button at the store than having to look at your camera. I am not too happy with the scroll up option to close pages. I think they tried to do too much.

Now looking at the Apple Watch 3, thats something I am interested and I might get it now that you don't require to have your phone, usually I always have my phone on me, but its nice to have the watch available to take calls incase you leave your phone in your car or at home...just makes things easy and I like it. The pricing seems to be decent. I might go for the dark version space grey. It looks nice, I just wish the button on the side wasn't red, but I can live with it.

Don the arrhythmia detector is not part of Watch 3. It was just showing what can be done with the upcoming medical kit api for developers.

Yes and that has been done. I have it on my Apple watch now. The app tracks your heart rate with 97% accuracy as documented by the clinical trials 24/7. What is not yet available on older Apple watches is the more precise sensor that is in the 3. According to the company, Cardiogram, Inc. the new release for the 3 will be able to measure the timing so accurate they can apply the algorithm that will measure the irregular heart rhythm that qualifies for a report of "atrial fibrillation." I'm trying to see if the new watch 3 will also detect atrial flutter which is what I had surgery for last year. Anyway, when I go in for a download of my pacemaker quarterly report, I can compare the app data to their printout. The technician noticed large gaps in my data and wondered what happened. I had to explain that there was no data recorded when I had the watch off while it was charging. :D

I also have another system made by Qardio using their own sensor but it is not 24/7 since you have to put it on and run the testing. This is no different than going to the doctor for an EKG. The Qardio supports iphone and apple watch for data logging but not measurement.

This will appeal to you and how many others? In business, this is known as a vertical market (the same could probably be said for 3D facial recognition) and as Microsoft, Palm, Blackberry and others discovered, you can't build a platform around a vertical market and expect it to thrive.

Can you really trust something that has a battery life of less than two days to such an important function?

Not sure you understand what this is all about.

As far as pooh poohing any of these medical apps as "vertical market" I just don't agree. When monitoring cardio conditions, the vertical market is likely to be any human over the age of 50 which is a fairly fat market if you ask me. Not the same as healthy runners age 25. You might think that the market doesn't include those over 50 but you'd be wrong on that too. Cruising a lot with senior citizens, I see the Apple watch is the most popular watch being worn on the cruises I took this past year. It is an important feature for me. If I had trouble with my lungs, I'd be eager for the O2 sensor getting FDA approval as well. Apple has said that they will not be doing clinical trials for the O2 sensor and leaving that up to the specialists as well.

It is important to understand that arrhythmia is a silent killer. For most people there is no sign you have it. One day you just suffer a stroke from it. It causes blood clots. Once diagnosed, you go on serious blood thinners as the treatment and have to go for periodic blood clotting tests or, opt for surgery to correct it which is only 70% successful. It is stuff like the Apple watch and others that is allowing people to live longer through early detection.

Thanks for the report on that. I'm sure Verizon will match that.

The next question, if I buy a cellular version and decide not to activate it with verizon right away, is that possible, or must one activate it to buy one? I'm sure if you bought it from Verizon that is a given, but if I buy from Apple, or Best Buy what are the rules? I may spring the extra bucks for the feature and just not activate it immediately. I too have my iphone and airpods with me all the time now. Don't see that habit changing.

I saw that too and thought he switched to his phone that had been set up. If there were two phones on a table and only one was initialized to my face, then like the finger print that didn't work, you get your access code to enter. When he picked up the second phone it worked repeatedly and was faster than my iphone finger print reader.

I heard one reviewer complaining that it didn't have facial recognition on the back cameras. He didn't pay attention that the facial recognition was not to recognize strangers in a crowd and identify them. It is for security on unlocking the phone and to gain access to some apps. It uses a special camera with 3D sensing via infrared. Pretty high tech. The earlier facial recognition systems could be fooled by good photograph which is why they were never considered safe for security. This 3D + 2D Photo and AI for minor face changes changes is a significant advancement. The system used by Google is strictly 2D for image identification.

One should never claim a present technology doesn't work because something they saw 8 years ago didn't work.

I believe the arrhythmia detection app will come later in the year and will work closely with Stanford University for it's studies. The app will be available to all Watches. The heart sensors will be the same in all Watches. It's the upcoming software update that will change how the Watch reads heart rate.

BTW.
Those looking at the LTE Watch, make sure you ask your carrier about contracts. Some will lock you in for 2 years to use the Watch 3.
Not worth it to me. I'll keep my 0 Watch (when Apple sends me a replacement) and look for deals on the 2 if I can find any.

But will the Watch 3 detect an onrushing hurricane?
;)

DING DING DING! MONEY FOR APPLE HERE:
They should set this up with TELADOC to transfer data on demand. 20M+ users today. Growing VERY FAST. Now THAT'S money on the table! Supporting telemedicine in all its forms is the coming thing. Blood sugar, O2, heart etc. send it to your doc before you get there. Computer at his end reads it and just tells doc what he needs to know. Actually, my doc is female, and I've had female docs for many years. Tricare. Or send it to TELADOC and maybe avoid an office visit. Or accelerate it. Think about that last one.

If you're not using TELADOC today, under whatever name- why not. Dumb. YOUR money, time and health.

I have the Samsung Frontier watch with T mobile. It's $5 extra on my plan.

LTE is nice when I'm out without my phone. Taking a call works great and steaming Spotify is nice.

Just watched the Watch keynote and damn, I want a new Apple Watch! :) Seriously -- this looks great. And two years of usage, about 17 hours a day on my Watch 1 is probably enough to move ahead and ugrade. Even the $10/mo. from Verizon doesn't bother me. Relatively cheap, for all the connectivity.

And I am pretty much sold on the 8+ as my upgrade. The real question is whether I turn in my 7, or just buy. the 8+ and transfer the 7 to my wife, who is still on a 6. I have until Friday to sort that out.

Agree! My older SS watch is black but the aluminum one is plain. You should go into a store and try one on to see how you like it.

Yep, thats the plan, I've been holding off for a while because I wanted the cellular capability, I was this close to buying the series 2, the series 3 is gonna be nice.

The problem I have with the iPhone X is that you have to look at your phone to unlock it and then swipe it, with the touchid all you have to do is touch it and it would unlock it without any additional steps, this is very counter intuitive if you ask me with the face id, maybe next year iPhone will have improvements in regards to the face id.

If I didn't have an iPhone 7 + I would upgrade to the 8, but right now there isn't enough incentive to upgrade and I think the 7+ value will stay up especially the 128GB model since Apple is only releasing 64GB and 256GB for next year for both iPhone 8 and iPhone X. So thats a good thing for me when I resell it to upgrade.

The 7 has a good resale value, swappa is a good site if you wanna sell it, honestly I'd just give it to your wife because the 7 is way faster than the 6 and she will definitely notice the speed upgrade, especially the touch ID which is way more responsive than the standard 6. I upgraded from the 6 to the 7+ and the speed difference is huge and the battery life is great.
